Nokia and Qualcomm dropped a few clues that point to a 5G-enabled Nokia 8.2 smartphone that will be released next year. At the Qualcomm 5G summit in Barcelona, HMD Global spokesperson said that it aims to halve the cost of 5G smartphones in 2020. That is in a bid to increase the rate of adoption. It also included other discussions about Nokia’s future.
In the past, Qualcomm has also teased the presence of a Premium mid-ranger from Nokia. And the Snapdragon 7 Series Mobile Platform with integrated 5G should be powering this mid-ranger. And since none of the present Snapdragon 7 series chipsets support 5G, this is likely a new unreleased chipset. 5G is going to be a major part of Qualcomm’s 2020 strategy. And we should hear a lot more about it at the Qualcomm Tech Summit in Hawaii in December.
Some rumors suggest that Nokia 8.2 will be the product, which makes a lot of sense. The Nokia 8 Series used Snapdragon 7 Series chipsets in the past. The 8 series is also priced just below the Nokia flagships and is nearly not as expensive. In fact, the Nokia 8.1 is up for a refresh in the coming months. And being one of HMD Global’s most successful smartphones, Nokia 8.2 may be the company’s affordable 5G handset.
More about the Nokia 8.2
Information about the upcoming mid-range Nokia is still scarce. But the 8.2 should adopt the same glass and metal sandwich design as most Nokia phones do. Instead of a notch, a hole-punch screen or a pop-up camera for the front will be used.
Speaking about cameras, we also anticipate a multi-camera setup. Such as the Nokia 7.2, boasting a 64MP main camera, an ultra-wide lens, and a depth sensor. ZEISS optics should also be pursuing.
Even MediaTek has announced its plans for affordable 5G smartphones for 2020. They will compete with Qualcomm’s upcoming mid-range smartphone chipset roster, bringing 5G to new price segments.
