Over the last few months, Chinese tipsters have claimed that Sony’s IMX686 is the next flagship image sensor from the company. Verifying these claims is a new video teaser of the Sony IMX686. And, this teaser has been shared on the Weibo account of Sony China. The video showcases some of the sample images captured using the next-gen image sensor.
Sony has still not released any details regarding the IMX686. The sample video shown below gives some ideas with the sample images. It’s only a matter of time before the Japanese tech giant does a press roll-out. The press conference would unveil the detailed configuration and features of the image sensor along with full-sized sample images.
Availability | Sony IMX686 Leaks
The Sony IMX686 has still not made it to any smartphone. As for the sample images, those were shot with a prototype board housing the IMX686. The prototype board with the sensor was connected to a PC. And if the initial samples are anything to go by, the IMX686 can be seen performing very well in varied lighting conditions. Moreover, some of the images captured show the wide-angle capabilities of the sensor.
Now the numbering of the Sony IMX686 image sensor does indicate this to be the successor to the Sony IMX586 sensor. It is the newest and most significant image sensor for the majority of smartphones and other mobile devices. The IMX 586, as we know, is in use by many devices throughout 2018 and still being used in 2019. The 586 performs its duties in many flagship phones, and even some mid-rangers designed to offer flagship-grade imaging experience.
And since Samsung launched the 64MP and 108MP image sensors very recently, this might be Sony’s upcoming answer to those. We’ve speculated the IMX686 to be a 60 or 64MP image sensor. So naturally, we would expect the IMX686 to offer a better imaging experience than Samsung’s product.
A credible Chinese tipster stated that the Sony IMX686 sensor will be available on the upcoming Huawei Nova 6 smartphone. Other sources also confirmed that several other phones will be using this sensor. Those include the likes of OPPO Reno 3v and Vivo X30 Pro that will house this particular sensor.
Please note that the photos displayed above are not actual specimens but screenshots from the IMX686 teaser video. Sample images show that the Sony IMX686 will provide an excellent imagery experience. We expect the devices featuring the new Sony image sensor would reach the Chinese markets before the end of 2019.
